Abu Bakar has been away for days, and Zaryab helps Khushbakht and Sakina hand out medicines to the neighbourhood. Then Khushbakht tells her that Habib has asked for her to spend a few days in Karachi, and Abu Bakar will send a car in the morning. Leaving, Zaryab tells herself she will not come back: she cannot be the girl they want, and they deserve better.

The car takes her first to Abu Bakar's company house at the factory colony. Zaryab asks the cook whether girls ever come there, and finds a single earring in the bedside drawer. Abu Bakar is annoyed that she asked his staff instead of him, and says it probably belonged to his old cook's daughter, who used to work there. Zaryab does not believe him.

On the drive to Karachi, Abu Bakar is listening to Quran recitation. When she asks what music he likes, she realises she cannot remember the last thing she listened to herself, and she has a panic attack. He stops the car and gets her water and air.

At home, her family can see she has changed. She wears shalwar kameez now, refuses to take back her old phone and does not want to hear from Zamil, who has called and texted many times. Asked about Abu Bakar, she says he is unreal, like a fictional character. If she looks back, she says, she will turn to stone.
